Welcome to The Joy Journal
Hi, I’m Mikayla!
When I was young, I created a “happy box.” It was an old shoebox plastered with images and quotes, hand-picked and clipped from teen magazines. In this box, I stored notes, receipts, tickets and photographs that carried meaning to me. The point was to collect things that made me “happy” and save them for a rainy day. Since then, I’ve come to realize that happiness is a fleeting emotion. It’s a mood, and moods are circumstantial. I always thought I wanted to live a happy life; I wanted to feel and be happy at work, home, in my future marriage and as a mother someday. Over time, my mindset shifted from wanting to be happy to wanting to be joyful. Why? Because joy is different than happy. Joy doesn’t happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day to live a joy-filled life. Joy is something you create, and you can create it in any circumstance—whether that circumstance be ordinary or extraordinary. Even on a rainy day, you can find ways to create moments of joy. And that’s the kind of life I want to live, the kind of marriage I want to have, the kind of mother I want to be. I want to choose joy, create joy, and scatter joy every day of my life.
I started The Joy Journal to talk about and share joy. I invite you to join me on my journey and share your own journey with me.
